Honda has invested $11 billion in its electric vehicle (EV) manufacturing plants in Canada, the largest in the country’s history. This monumental move from the company is aligned with its goal for further growth in its EV lineup and driving innovation by decreasing emissions from its manufacturing.

Honda held a media event at its manufacturing campus in Alliston, Ontario Canada, where it revealed its blueprint to construct four new manufacturing plants. Within these plants are an assembly plant for EVs and a battery plant with the other two joint-venture supplier plants for making battery components according to Honda.

The EV assembly plant is expected to produce around 240,000 EVs annually, whereas the battery plant will produce 36 gigawatt-hours of EV batteries annually. In addition, these plants will create 1,000 jobs, adding to its 4,200 employees at the site.

Furthermore, Honda’s investment in its plants will be partnered with the Canadian and Ontario governments to assist in finalization, which includes investment tax credits and direct incentives. Overall, the federal government will pledge up to $1.8 billion in investment tax credits and Ontario will pledge the same amount.

This new investment by Honda was previously followed by its EV hub in Ohio, where it includes adapting existing plants, an investment of USD$700 million, and the construction of a joint venture EV battery plant with LG Energy Solution, with an expected investment of USD$4.4 billion.

Moreover, the Ohio EV hub will also act in its role of establishing future EV and EV battery production in terms of knowledge and expertise with other Honda plants in North America. Honda expects EV production to begin at the Marysville Auto Plant in late 2025.

With Honda making large investments to increase its EV-based approach to its strategies, these new plants from its U.S. plants and Canadian plants are sure to bring the company to new heights that will place them at an advantage in the future. As the EV market is getting increasingly competitive, Honda is putting its name in the hat to top its rivals.
